About this project
SURF at Homestake will be the centerpiece of the National Science Foundation's Deep Science Initiative, intended to extend the frontiers of particle physics and astrophysics, biology, geosciences and engineering – and foster synergies among them. DUSEL is a cooperative basic scientific endeavor involving NSF, UC Berkeley, the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. DUSEL will take advantage of the availability of the recently decommissioned Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, to create one of the world's preeminent underground laboratories, using the shielding properties of the earth to screen out cosmic background noise and create a suitable environment for large particle detectors at unprecedented depths. In addition, the existing mine allows extensive ready access to deep levels of rock and strata for a variety of biological, engineering, and geological studies. As Homestake is no longer in use for mining purposes, DUSEL will be a dedicated laboratory with no interfering or competing uses for its infrastructure.
